hope in the bible

Hope in the Bible

Hope in the Bible is quite different from what the world refers to as hope. When the world refers to “hope”, they usually mean that they are unsure and uncertain of the desired outcome. It is like rolling a dice and “hoping” it falls in favor with no amount of certainty. It is like someone in a hospital “hoping” that their surgery will be a success. It is like a student “hoping” he/she would pass the examination.  When people do their very best and are still uncertain of the desired outcome, they hope for the best. Life throws some serious challenges, some worse than others and some due to our own poor choices, and some others due to unexpected and sudden circumstances. Under those situations, if all you can do is “hope” without any certainty of joy or peace or success, then rest assured that is a worldly hope. But hope in the bible is the confident expectation of all the promises of God which is available to us through Jesus Christ.

Romans 15:13 – I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Hope in the bible motivates us, hope in the bible encourages us, and hope in the bible helps us to look ahead.

This is a short bible study about hope in the bible. Let us dissect Romans 15:13 and glean some treasure from the word of God. Here are 6 points worth meditating on as part of your bible study plan.

Source of hope in the Bible

The very beginning of Romans 15:13 clearly indicates that the source of hope in the bible is God. Some other versions start off with “May the God of hope” ….

People who dig deep into the very source of hope and choose to hope in God, have an inexplainable assurance and peace amidst all situations as opposed to worldly hope which only is evidence of uncertainty and despair. Some hope on their education to build a life of their choosing, some hope in their career, some hope in their spouse, and some others hope in their own abilities. But all worldly hope results in the same pit of despair and uncertainty. On the contrary, when we hope in the Lord, we will always be victorious. Not because we will always overcome our challenges, but because God works all things together for good when you love Him and put your trust in Him. This is hope in the bible which is quite different to hope in the world. In the Old Testament, God reveals himself to people through His different names. Jehovah Jireh, Jehovah Rapha, Jehovah Nissi, and many others, but in the New Testament, God reveals himself by his character through Jesus Christ. He is the God of hope, the God of peace, and the God of love.

Recipients of hope in the Bible

Romans 15:13 says God, who is the source of hope will fill YOU completely. You are the recipient of God’s hope, and so am I. We those who believe in Him and love Him are the recipients of hope in the bible. God’s hope is not for everyone. We that believe in Him are the privileged few to be able to hope in God and be unshakeable in all situations.

Signs of hope in the Bible

How can others know that you are hoping in the Lord? There are specific signs that clearly indicate to a worldly person that your hope is not on anyone or anything this world can offer, but your hope is in the Lord alone. Romans 15:13 says God will fill you with Joy and peace because you trust in Him. You could be in a financial mess or perhaps one of your loved ones could be in the hospital battling a serious illness. In such situations, worldly hope does little to provide comfort. Sometimes false hope can cause you to sink further into disappointment and depression. But hope in the bible fills you with joy and peace despite the situations life throws at you. Paul and Silas were full of joy even when in prison in the worst of living conditions and were still singing, causing a miracle breakthrough. In the book of Acts, we see that the disciples went away rejoicing after being persecuted and beaten for preaching the gospel. Habakkuk says about rejoicing when circumstances are bad. Nehemiah 8:10 – The joy of the Lord is my strength. The peace of God is another sure sign that your hope is in God.

Phil 4:7 – Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

Peter was in prison knowing he was going to be beheaded the following morning, but he was sleeping in peace. An angel had to literally shake him up to wake him up. That is the kind of peace God gives you. When you have hope in God, He will fill you with joy and peace. This is hope in the bible.

Conditions of hope in the Bible

There is just one condition that needs to be met for you to experience this hope. Trust in God. That is the condition. Romans 15:13 says, “I pray that the God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. When you trust in God, you are filled with joy and peace. This hope is only for those who believe. We must believe in God’s promises. Hebrews 11:1 says, “Faith is the assurance of things “hoped” for”. As a believer, you do believe without a shadow of a doubt that Jesus is alive and that He is returning soon, don’t you? You have that “hope”, and that “hope” is not uncertainty but an “assurance”. The same hope that you have on the return of our Lord and Savior Jesus should be extended into your day-to-day challenges in life as well. The one condition for experiencing hope in the bible is that you trust in God.

Result of hope in the Bible

Romans 15:13 says, “I pray that the God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope”. The result of hoping in God is that you will overflow with confident hope. Some versions say “abound in hope”. Both words, overflow and abound mean that you have more than enough. So much more that it begins to overflow and extend to others around you. You will become a source of encouragement to others around you too.  Hope in the bible grows whereas worldly hope depletes with time. Worldly hope shouts doubt and uncertainty and when you abound in worldly hope, you only end up spreading fear and grief to those around you. But hope in the bible is confident and ever-increasing. More and more hope. Not depleting and becoming less and less. This is hope in the bible as you trust in the Lord.

Means of hope in the Bible

And finally, as we conclude this bible study, the means of such hope in the bible is not by drumming up self-confidence or giving ourselves a pep talk. It is not by listening to pep talks and inspiring messages from life coaches or preachers either.  The means of hope in the bible is only by the power of the Holy Spirit. We keep this hope alive by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 15:13 – I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.

You can only overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. I urge you, brethren, to pray and seek the power of the Holy Spirit in your walk with God. Apart from Him, we can do nothing. “Nothing” means “nothing”, including overcoming sin, believing and not doubting, walking in holiness, preaching and teaching, being a witness to others, and being the godly husband or wife or father or mother or child that we need to be. Apart from the power of the Holy Spirit, we can do nothing.

In conclusion, this study on hope in the bible can be summarized as,

  1. God is the source of hope
  2. We who believe are the recipients of this hope
  3. Joy and peace in us are the sure signs that our hope is in the Lord
  4. This hope is only available for those who trust in God
  5. We will overflow with hope when our trust is in Him
  6. We can only overflow through the power of the Holy Spirit
